Academics
You will receive your PADI
training materials in the mail ahead of your scheduled class, so you
can prepare for the academic sessions at home. Choose video, DVD, or
CD-ROM along with the PADI Open Water Diver Manual to help you
understand the principles of diving. The PADI system of diver education
believes that repetition is the key to learning... read the manual,
watch the DVD's and complete the Knowledge Reivews and you should have a
good grasp of the information presented. You will complete Knowledge
Reviews and mini-quizzes at your leisure before attending the course.
This "home-study" will allow you to better prepare for the class and
will allow your instructor to focus more on the "hand-on" equipment
training, dive tables instruction and general review prior to your
quizzes and final exam. These academic sessions can be done at our home/
office or your home or office, or at the dive destination. Classes can
be scheduled for evening sessions, weekends, or mini-vacations (see the
upcoming trips to get certified in an exotic dive destination and learn
while you are on vacation in the Caribbean!).

Confined Water
Confined Water sessions are
completed either in a swimming pool or other shallow, clear, calm body of
water. The confined water sessions allow you to get comfortable with the
equipment and the new underwater skills you will be learning. You will be
fitted for proper equipment prior to your confined water session. During the
training you will learn how to set-up and break-down your SCUBA equipment,
practice in-water skills like clearing water from your regulator and mask,
using the fins, and buoyancy control. You'll also learn emergency procedures
like using an alternate air source, free-flow regulator breathing, tired
diver tows and making an emergency swimming ascent. Once you are
comfortable with the skills you have learned, you'll move on to the open
water diving portion of the PADI Open Water Diver Certification course.

Open Water
Your course includes 4 open
water dives, which can be completed over two days. Dives can be done
in the freshwater springs of Florida or in the ocean (Gulf of Mexico
or Atlantic). The dives start with you setting up your equipment and
doing a full equipment check with your buddy. Once you enter the
water with your instructor, you'll do some surface skills and then
descent to begin your check-out dives. The beginning of the dives is
usually a guided underwater tour. Once you are comfortable
underwater, you will demonstrate the skills that you have already
mastered in the confined water portion of the course. The open water
dives are not the time to learn new skills, just to show your
instructor that you are comfortable and capable of doing the
required skills for PADI Open Water cerification. Once you have
completed all of required skills and training, you will become a
fully certified PADI Open Water Diver. With this rating, you can
safely plan and execute dives without the supervision of an
instructor, get air fills, and partake in continuing education
training.
